9 SURVEY OF WASTE DISPOSAL OPTIONS & THEIR IMPACT ON THE PORTABLE SANITATION INDUSTRY © Copyright 2020 by the PSAI. All rights reserved. 3. The cost to dispose of waste varies widely, and it is rising overall, often at rates that exceed inflation. There are two common ways of charging portable sanitation companies to dispose of their hauled waste: by the load and by the gallon. Around three out of four disposal facilities charge by the gallon. The types of charges are spread widely across North America, with the Pacific Northwest and the Rust Belt being most likely to charge by the gallon. Each participating company was asked to provide the amount it is currently being charged to dispose of waste in each state where it conducts disposal operations. Some respondents answered this question fully, some answered it partially, and some did not provide this data. Consequently, we believe the numbers in Figure 14 can be informative but are also limited due to the comparatively small number of data points per state or province.
