Overall, the range of company locations, lengths of business operation, and volume of waste disposed would suggest that the issues revealed in the survey findings are not specific to one geographical area or size of operation. They are generally widespread and affect most portable sanitation companies on a consistent basis. Major Findings 1. Most portable sanitation companies are reliant upon POTWs for waste disposal, something that is problematic given the capacity issues of these plants. Nearly 63% of the firms responding to the PSAI survey reported their company currently has access to a POTW that is both willing to accept its waste and feasible to use. Around 59% of companies take their waste immediately to the POTW, while 4% do some pre-treatment before delivering the load. 10 2. Privately-owned waste facilities external to the company provide the best disposal option for 15% of the responding companies. After that, portable sanitation firms are equally likely to use land application (11%) or an onsite treatment solution they've installed for their company (11%). It is not surprising that the majority of companies use a POTW, although it is likely that a combined 63% is a smaller number than would have been the case in the past. As we have no baseline data to which to compare, this is something of an educated guess based on the perceptions of longtime industry members. Assuming waste treatment capacity at POTWs continues to be a challenge, it is likely this number will be further reduced as portable sanitation companies are forced to seek or build alternative waste disposal solutions.
