Telematics Industry Growing Technology companies are making investments in trucking- related services. On January 8, Lytx Inc.—a California company whose systems monitor commercial vehicles—announced that London-based private-equity firm Permira had invested $1 billion and secured a majority share. On January 9, California's Trimble Transportation and Logistics reached an agreement to acquire Kuebix, a leading transportation management system provider based in Massachusetts. California DMV Enforces Tight Emission Standards for Commercial Trucks Starting this year, California's DMV will refuse registration for any state-licensed diesel-fueled vehicle over 14,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) that fails to meet the state's in-use emission standards. Heavy duty diesel vehicles that operate on California roads are also subject to the rule and subject to fines for non-compliance. Though out of state vehicles will not be denied registration, fines can add up and many operators are feeling the pinch. Read the full story here. 18th-Century Toilets Made to Look Like Books An article by Jessica Leigh Hester uncovers a fun fact about the undeniable tie between restrooms and reading. The library-themed lavatory at left (photographed by Emmanuel de Prycher) is inside the Hofkamer, a structure within the Den Wolsack complex in Antwerp, Belgium. The bathroom was designed by the building's 18th-century owner in consultation with an architect of the time. In other households, less ornate faux book covers might hide a chamber pot.
