It includes specific training programs, accountability processes, hiring and retention criteria, maintenance, and record-keeping requirements. Start by googling "commercial fleet safety program" or talking to your insurance carrier. Companies selling certain types of software (fleet tracking, human resources solutions, etc.) and equipment (cameras, lighting, etc.) may also be good sources of information, though their advice will usually need to be supplemented with other resources. A Shameless Plug. A generic safety program is better than nothing. But it is far more effective to design a program specifically for your company and your fleet. On March 25, 2020 the PSAI will hold a daylong course at the Annual Convention and Trade Show on how to do just that. The session, "A Comprehensive Approach to Managing a Fleet Safety Program," will be led by Ken Urquhart, a seasoned veteran of the Minnesota State Patrol who now works with the Minnesota Chapter of the National Safety Council and teaches motor vehicle safety programs at Hennepin Technical College.
