The chart below is provided to assist you with your 2020 planning. Please note that many local jurisdictions have a minimum wage rate higher than the state. Employers covered by federal, state, and local minimum wage rates must generally pay employees the highest applicable rate. Most payroll companies will help make sure you are in compliance with the applicable updated minimum rates. If you require assistance in identifying impacted employees and applicable minimum wage rates, contact your payroll specialist or human resource generalist. If you handle payroll in-house, contact your state department responsible for wages and compliance. Failure to comply with minimum wage laws could result in substantial penalties by enforcing agencies. The chart at left indicates states with increased minimum wage rates effective January 1, 2020. The effective date for minimum wage changes in New York is December 31, 2019. In California, large employers are defined as those with 26 or more employees. Small employers have 25 or fewer employees. To learn more about small and large employers in California, visit this link. Minnesota defines large employers as those who have annual gross revenues of $500,000 or more. Small employers have less than $500,000 in annual gross revenues. Local jurisdictions have the authority to make changes beyond what the state or federal government requires, so a number of local governments have also increased wage minimums effective January 1, 2020.
