WEEKLY EDITION DECEMBER 4, 2019 A Hundred Bucks Buddy and Edna had been married for years and had founded a portable sanitation company that did well enough, but they had little cash to spare at Christmas. Each year, Buddy would say the only Christmas gift he wanted was a helicopter ride. Without fail, Edna would say it was too expensive. Sometimes, in exasperation, Buddy would counter, "The company is doing better. Surely we can afford $100!" But Edna always replied, "A hundred bucks is a hundred bucks," and he'd end up with another pair of socks under the tree. One day the two were shopping at the mall when they came across a fellow offering helicopter rides. "Edna," said Buddy earnestly, "I'd really like a ride in that helicopter!" But Edna repeated, "A hundred bucks is a hundred bucks." They continued to bicker and debate when the pilot happened to walk by and overhear their fight. "I tell you what," the pilot offered. "I'll take you both up for a ride. If no one makes a sound, the rides will be free. If even one word comes out, it's $100 each." Seizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Buddy and Edna climbed into the copter. The pilot took off and gave them quite a ride. He did all kinds of fancy maneuvers and flying tricks and tried over and over to shake them with dare devil stunts. Not a peep came from the back of the helicopter. Finally the pilot landed and exclaimed to Buddy, "I have to hand it to you. I did everything I know up there to scare a sound out of you, but you stayed quiet!" Modestly, Buddy replied, "Well, I almost said something when Edna fell out, but after all, a hundred bucks is a hundred bucks!"
