WEEKLY EDITION DECEMBER 4, 2019 Co ld W e at he r Pre ca ut ions By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director…continued from page 1 We suggest using rock salt, brine and/or methanol (or a combination of these chemicals) to protect units from freezing. Other salts and antifreezes perform well but, due to their prohibitive costs, are impractical for everyday use. The chart below lists the amounts of salt, methanol, or salt and methanol combined that will protect water from freezing at various temperatures. SALT Two pounds of salt is the maximum amount that can be dissolved in one gallon of water. METHANOL CAUTION: Methanol becomes flammable when quantities exceed 30%. Not all jurisdictions allow methanol. SALT AND METHANOL COMBINED The methanol amounts below are added to a pre-mixed solution containing two pounds of salt per one gallon of water. B rin e S o lu t io n Brine CAUTION: Do not wash units with brine solution. It will leave a white salt residue that comes off on clothing. Use a little methanol in your washing solution for scrubbing and cleaning. PAGE 2 CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
