WEEKLY EDITION JULY 3, 2019 "The Importance and Value of Portable Sanitation" By Devyn Luden, 2019 PSAI Scholarship Winner As the group went on with our week and mission work, we learned just how much a lack of clean water truly affected the country of Haiti. In 2018, over 75% of the Haitian people were living without access to safe drinking water and sanitation. While visiting an orphanage, we saw children with infections because there was no clean water for them to bathe in. We heard stories at the local hospital about the peak of the Cholera outbreak in 2009 and how easily the disease spread due to the lack of proper sanitation. In two years, nearly 6,000 people in Haiti had died as a result of Cholera and more than 21,000 other people were infected with the disease. Learning about these troubling facts and witnessing first hand the effects of living in a country with disease ridden water left me feeling hopeless for the world. How could I live in the United States with access to safe water whenever I want it when people in Haiti cannot even take a clean shower? However, I have learned that things like portable sanitation can make developing countries, such as Haiti, a safer place. In fact, the mission of the PSAI states, "We preserve lives and improve experiences by providing clean, safe portable sanitation through our Member companies." PSAI and their portable sanitation products located in over 30 countries worldwide are making clean sanitation possible. The use of their products, like dry flushing toilets, help to stop the spread of disease making developing countries healthier and happier places. Portable sanitation is just one of the many things used in the fight for clean drinking water for all people across the globe. While portable sanitation may not seem that important to the people of the United States, it has the ability to save lives all around the world. – D e v y n Lu de n PAGE 4
