W EEKLY EDITION NOVEMBER 6, 2019 J er ks At Wor k - An d Ho w T o De a l W ith Them By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director Are you worried the jerk you don't hire – or that you fire – will work for a competitor? In the short run it may seem like a problem – especially if they are seemingly successful at the competitor's firm. Just remember, a leopard doesn't change its spots v ery easily. The jerk you no longer employ will be busy ruining the culture, motivation and productivity at your competitor's firm as well. Learn from Southwest Airlines: In a 2014 employee survey, when we asked whether people felt like their job was "ju st a job," "a stepping stone," or "a calling," nearly 75% selected, "a calling," and 86% said they were proud to work for Southwest. So hiring for values seems to be working from our employees' perspective as well as ours. You can't beat that. When employ ees are proud to work for a company – and see their work as a calling – success is sure to follow. Let us know how it works for you. - KK P AGE 18
