WEEKLY EDITION SEPTEMBER 18, 2019 It' s Y our Turn: Serve on t he PSA I Boa rd of Di rectors and Mak e Y our Ma rk … continued from page 1 Matt Sola, Past President and Chair of the 2019-2020 Nominating Committee So, when the Nominating Committee reached out to me many years ago and asked me to serve on the PSAI Board, in one respect it felt like the most natural thing in the world for me to do. I was gradually taking on more responsibility for our business. Wasn't it time to step up as leader at the PSAI also? You would think so — but I had my reservations. I was, in fact, plenty busy with my duties at our company. I wanted to do a good job there, and I had plenty on my plate. More importantly, after all those years of watching some true industry leaders steer the PSAI, I wondered what I would bring to the table that would be of use in moving the PSAI forward. Because I was curious, I kept an open mind about it. I am thankful I had the benefit of friendship with many of the previous Board Directors, and they took the time to answer my questions and address my concerns as I considered whether to go for it. In talking with these more experienced people, the most important thing I learned is this: When it is all said and done, service on the PSAI Board is like everything else in portable sanitation. It mainly requires heart and commitment. Everything else can be learned. New leaders will continue to build our Association. In many ways, serving on the PSAI Board was part of a predictable progression for me and my career development. I learned at least as much as I contributed, and I am incredibly proud of the things the Board has accomplished while I have been part of it. It's easy to forget how far we have come over the past few years. (If you're curious for a refresher, check out our year-by-year accomplishments on the PSAI's website — it's all there). Now, as I see my years as a Director drawing to a close, I am confident the Board leaders who come after me will carry on the wonderful PSAI legacy and continue to build on it for years to come. In this small and collegial industry of ours, everyone can and should take a turn at helping to shape the direction of our priorities. Why don't you consider becoming one of those leaders? Here are just a few of the reasons you should run for a spot on the Board: • Make an impact. In football and in life it is easy to sit in our armchairs and call out plays others should have made. The PSAI is no different. You undoubtedly have ideas about how we can run a better Association. Don't stay on the sidelines. We want and need your ideas; that's how we move ahead. • Giving back. We all take something away from each event that we attend. Now you can give back and "pay it forward" for the next group of professionals. PAGE 14 CONTINUED ON PAGE 15
