Remembering Clyde Sansom
By Jeff Wigley, Past President, PSAI Board of Directors
The unit was a High Tech and was manufactured by a company
named Synergy World. This being before the internet my
research was more cumbersome, but I finally ascertained that
Synergy World was in St. Louis and I even found a phone numb er.
I called the company, stated my interest in the industry, and was
immediately transferred to the owner of the company. Wow! A
gentleman named Clyde Sansom answered the phone and
seemed excited that I had called. I asked him about the unit and
expressed my desire to enter the industry. What did this kind and
gentle soul do? He invited me to come to St Louis and to spend
the week with him. He would teach me everything that he knew
and allow me to decide if the portable restroom industry was
re ally for me. I had worked with IBM for 10 years and open
sharing of information i n the computer industry was unheard of.
What a nice and generous man!
When I arrived at Johnny on the Spot, Clyde's portable sanitation
operation in St Louis, Clyde met wi th me. He took his time to give
me an overview of the industry and his desire to give the best
possible service to all of his many customers. I spent a day with a route service technician, a day with a
pickup and delivery driver, a day with his special ev ent team, a day with his yard crew, and a day with his
office manager. At the conclusion of each day, Clyde met with me to discuss what I had learned and to
answer any questions I had. He was not above taking time out of his day to meet with a guy from A tlanta
who was basically clueless about the portable restroom industry. I noticed that Clyde's office was not in
some remote corner of his facility. It was a desk right in the middle of the others. "I want to be close to
the action" was his explanation.
