W EEKLY EDITION JUNE 19, 2019 PSAI Engages in US Adoption Discussion for Next Generation Toilet Standard By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director …Contin ued From Page 1 B ac kg r ou n d . In 2016 the PSAI joined with experts from around the world to help develop an international standard for "next generation toilets." That standard, known globally as ISO 30500 (full title: Non - sewered sanitation systems — Prefab ricated integrated treatment units — General safety and performance requirements for design and testing) will revolutionize the development of non - sewered sanitation systems. It will also encourage cleaner safer sanitation systems for populations in commun ities across the globe. The International Organization published it for Standardization (ISO) in late 2018. The next step in the process of evolving these important new sanitation options is for national standards bodies like the American National Standa rds Institute (ANSI) to adopt the international standard — or a version of it — in their countries. That process is currently under way in dozens of countries around the world . A d op t io n of IS O 3 0 5 00 in N o r th A me r i c a. The document currently under review for ad option in the US and Canada is a slightly amended version of ISO 30500. The changes are primarily limited to clarifying measures that are stated in the International System of Units to include their US Customary Units equivalent. Proposed modifications als o include updating how numbers are written in the text. For example, a section on treatment capacity is proposed as follows: T h e de s ig n ca p ac i ty w i t h r e g ar d to h u ma n f a e c e s a n d u r in e s h a ll b e in d i c at e d as e xp e c t e d u s e s p e r da y (f ae ca l u s e s / d ay a n d u ri n e u s e s / d ay ).
