79 2019 INDUSTRY RESOURCE DIRECTORY Cleaning Procedures For Portable Sanitation Equipment HAND WASH STATION IMPORTANT • It is absolutely essential that you have and use equipment for cleaning hand wash stations that is not used for any other equipment or purpose. • It is also essential that equipment for cleaning hand wash stations be stored separately on the truck and not in contact with the other equipment to avoid cross-contamination. ON THE YARD IN THE FIELD Goal: Achieve "like new" condition; unit is free of any algae or bacteria. Unit should have an empty tank. Clean the fresh water compartment • Use a mild detergent to wash the walls, floor and lid of the compartment. • Rinse with fresh water to remove soap. • Wash the fresh water supply lines with a round brush that will fit the tube, e.g., a bottle brush. • Flush the lines thoroughly with a 10% solution of bleach and water to sanitize them and reduce algae build up. Clean the wastewater compartment • Use a mild detergent to wash the walls, floor and lid of the compartment. • Rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove all soap residues. • Rinse the wastewater compartment with a 10% solution of bleach and water. • Clean the surface area with a mild detergent. The basin, counter surface, front and back of the unit should be cleaned. • Clean the faucet areas and the drain areas. Inspect the unit to ensure: • The connections are all tight and in place. • All pumps are in place and in working order. • Dispensers for supplies are in place and in working order. • All necessary decals and announcement notices are in place. This should include a notice that this water is for hand washing only. Goal: Units should be serviced at least weekly on the same day so there is never more than a 7 day interval. Restore the unit to its best possible field condition. To service the hand wash station: • Suction the grey water from the wastewater compartment. • Wash the outside surface area with a mild detergent. This includes the faucet, basin, drain areas, counter surface, front and back of the unit. • Inspect for algae or slime; treat the unit and hoses with 10% solution of bleach and water if present. Use this solution once every 45 days regardless of whether you observe algae or slime. • Inspect and repair the unit as necessary and possible in the field. If the unit has damage that cannot be repaired, and which would compromise user safety, privacy, or the environment, change it out for a new unit from the yard. • Refill the fresh water compartment. • Refill the paper towels and soap dispensers as needed. Inspect the unit to ensure: • The connections are all tight and in place. • All pumps are in place and in working order. • Dispensers for supplies are in place and in working order. • All necessary decals and announcement notices are in place.
