This is so a full safety mask can be worn without anything diminishing its effectiveness. Learning about these things ahead of time and taking whatever steps you can proactively will help you later. Additional Company Requirements In order to compete for and win these contracts, your company will usually also have to be prepared to devote considerable resources to demonstrating your overall competence in areas related to safety and risk management. You will typically need to make sure the following are in place and meet the minimum requirements: • Safety program • OSHA statistics • Insurance • Training records • Related safety and HR policies You may also be required to submit to a third-party review of these records to maintain your eligibility to receive these contracts. All of it may seem like a hassle—and it is—so you'll have to determine how long it will take to recover the costs. Also be aware that if your worker's comp mod is too high, your company may not qualify for these contracts until the mod comes down. Specialized Commercial Requirements Some kinds of job sites have their own requirements. We can't possibly cover them all—but here are just a couple you might want to have on your radar: • Certain big box stores have building site requirements that are the same wherever they build. The requirements have been through the companies' legal departments and are designed to meet the most stringent rules in the US. You should know that: » Things the companies' general contractors say are "required" may not be legally necessary in your area. For example, containment pans and stake downs are common requirements, and the general contractor may insist this is an EPA requirement (see page 90 for more information on EPA requirements on building sites). » You can try to educate the general contractor or site supervisor, but it probably won't matter. If you want these contracts, you'll have to provide what they require. Build the cost of doing these things into your bid. • Agricultural job sites also have unique requirements that can vary from state to state. Within California, they even vary among counties. Common requirements involve the location of hand wash facilities. Some of the sites need to have the wash facilities INSIDE the unit, and some require them OUTSIDE the unit. Take the time to learn about the rules before you bid, and make sure you understand if the job site will be affected by rules in more than one jurisdiction.
