Dealing with Employee Theft
By PSAI Executive Director Karleen Kos
"Once an investigator establishes an area of the [employee's] narrative that raises red flags, he or she can probe further by :
• requesting deta ils in the areas of inquiry that raised suspicion
• asking the [employee] to tell the story backwards
• questioning any conflicting information
i - Sight also recommends that you use words carefully.
• "Remember, the word "theft" is a minefield all by itself. Us ed in the wrong circumstances it could expose your
company to litigation, a defamation claim or worse."
• "It's better to accuse the employee of "violating company policy" or of a "cash handling violation" than accusing
him or her of "theft.""
