The PSAI Certification Program – Its Five-Year Mission
By Jeff Wigley, PSAI Certification Commission Co-Chair
With all of the new and innovative programs and initiatives coming out of the "New PSAI" since its
inception in 2012-13, what has been going on
with the Certification Commission? Well, for
those "Star Trek"
Fans, "we have been
on a five year mission
to seek out new life
… to boldly go
where no one has
gone before …"

When Karleen Kos
came onboard in
2014, the PSAI took a
tremendous and
momentous step
forward. As part of
the plan to evaluate
all of the programs of
the Association, the Certification Program was
assessed. The Certification Commission met in
Atlanta in June of 2014 and the consensus was
that this program, initiated in 1992, needed to be improved and updated.
Since then, the goal has been to create a new accreditable program built on the rich knowledge and
strengths of the old program.
To begin with, the name and structure of the group changed to the "Certification Commission" from
the "Certification Committee." This change occurred as the organizational structure moved totally and
completely separate from the PSAI Board, from the Training and Credentialing Committee and from
the Standards and Guidance Committee. The Commission serves the PSAI at arms-length in order to
keep the eligibility requirements and examination independent, secure, and relevant to the entire
portable sanitation industry.
