W EEKLY EDITION JULY 18, 2018 New International Standard on Sustainable, Non - Se wered Waste Systems Moves to Final Review Deadline for organizations voting on global standards in September By Karleen Kos, PSAI Executive Director A group of experts from countries around the world voted late last month to advance the draft of Internati onal Standard 30500: Non - sewered sanitation systems — Prefabricated integrated treatment units — General safety and performance requirements for design and testing. Global standards bodies have until September 6, 2018 to vote on whether to accept the curre nt language as final for the new standard. The PSAI, working through the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) , has been involved in the development of the standard and will participate in discussions with the US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on th e US vote. ISO formed a project committee (PC 305) in May 2016 to develop an international standard for non - sewered sanitation systems. In the first step toward that goal, a group of experts from around the globe worked together to develop an Internationa l Workshop Agreement (IWA) – a more informal paper on the topic that is intended to have a comparatively short lifespan. Publication of the IWA occurred on September 1, 2016. Executive Director Karleen Kos represented the PSAI in the development of the IWA . PC 305 then began work on the more formal standard for non - sewered waste systems. This is done using delegations from interested countries working through their national standards bodies according to ISO standards development procedures. PC 305 has use d the IWA as the basis for development of the new standards. ANSI has been at the table throughout the development of PC 305's new standard. Kos and others have served on ANSI's US TAG, providing information and feedback at each step in the standard's dev elopment. The standard will be applicable to individual and community sanitation systems that are self - contained, meet defined discharge requirements, and aim for sustainability. The U.S. has served as the leader of PC 305, with Doulaye Kone of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation serving as chairman and ANSI serving as twinned secretariat alongside ASN, Senegal's member body of ISO.
